Position Overview

The SRN-Midwife at the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE)/KGH will provide safe, comprehensive and respectful maternal and newborn care to women throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postnatal period, in accordance with national guidelines and best clinical practices. Working within a multidisciplinary team, the SRN - Midwife will ensure high-quality clinical care, prompt response to obstetric and newborn emergencies, maintains infection prevention standards, and contributes to continuous quality improvement within the MCOE.

This position requires a highly skilled candidate who communicates well, works effectively in a high-volume setting, and adheres to national protocols and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Antenatal Care

  • Conduct antenatal assessments, including history taking, physical examination, and risk identification
  • Identify high-risk pregnancies and ensure timely referral per national protocol
  • Provide health education on nutrition, hygiene, birth preparedness, complication readiness, malaria prevention (IPTp) and danger signs
  • Monitor fetal growth and maternal well-being
  • Administer prescribed medications, supplements, and immunizations
  • Promote adolescent-friendly and inclusive ANC services

B. Intrapartum Care (Labor and Delivery)

  • Monitor labor using tools such as the Labour Care Guide (LCG)
  • Conduct safe, clean and respectful deliveries, including active management of the third stage of labor
  • Identify complications early and initiate appropriate interventions or timely referrals
  • Provide emotional and physical support to women during labour
  • Ensure companionship in labour where feasible and respectful maternity care practices

C. Postnatal Care

  • Provide immediate and routine postnatal care for mother and newborn within 24 hours and follow-up visits.
  • Monitor mothers and newborns for complications/danger signs during the postnatal period
  • Support early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding
  • Provide family planning counseling and postpartum FP services
  • Educate mothers on newborn care and danger signs

D. Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care

  • Recognize and manage obstetric emergencies (e.g., postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labor)
  • Perform life-saving interventions within the scope of practice
  • Stabilize and refer complicated cases appropriately

E. Infection Prevention and Control

  • Adhere strictly to MoHSIPC protocols and standard precautions
  • Ensure hand hygiene, PPE use, sterilization, and safe waste management practices

F. Documentation and Reporting

  • Accurately record all clinical findings, interventions, and outcomes
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Participate in data collection and reporting systems (e.g., registers, electronic tools like CommCare)
  • Participate in MPDSR reviews, case audits, and implementation of recommendations

G. Communication and Teamwork

  • Collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff
  • Participate in ward rounds, handovers, and multidisciplinary meetings
  • Provide respectful, non-discriminatory, and culturally appropriate care
  • Support mentoring of junior staff, students, and trainees

H. Health Education and Community Engagement

  • Conduct outreach activities and health promotion campaigns/ health talks
  • Promote maternal and newborn health services facility delivery, ANC/PNC attendance, and adolescent reproductive health services
  • Support linkage between facility and community health structures (CHWs, MCH Aides)

I. Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing training, mentorship, and continuous professional development
  • Adhere to professional codes of conduct and ethical standards

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

3. Qualifications and Requirements

  • Diploma or Degree in Midwifery from a recognized institution
  • Registered and licensed with the relevant Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Certification in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) is an added advantage
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of midwifery experience preferred.
  • Experience in maternity, labor ward, postnatal ward, neonatal care is desirable.
